At 15, with 2716 Elo: Erdogmus and Turkey's ambition to match India

Turkish chess has a new symbol. At the age of 15, Yagiz Kaan Erdogmus reached 2716 Elo on the live rating list, becoming the youngest player in history to cross the 2700 mark. His career is already a collection of age records: crossing 2600 at 13 years, 2 months and 15 days; posting the highest ratings for ages 12, 13 and 14; and becoming the youngest player to enter the world's top 100, top 50 and top 20. He currently sits 26th in the world. Veteran grandmaster Shakhriyar Mamedyarov believes Erdogmus can aspire to 2900. Erdogmus is not alone: Ediz Gürel, 17, is part of a Turkish youth wave that wants to copy India's chess boom and raise chess popularity in Turkey. The records are real, but the next step is harder: top-level tournament competition will decide whether this prodigy becomes a true contender or only a young phenomenon. Data on opening choices, tactical patterns and results against elite opposition is still limited, so observers should wait before predicting a future world champion. Turkey's long-term goal needs more than one star; it needs a complete chess ecosystem.
