Jane Kavanagh commits to Notre Dame: The 1.98-second gap and the development puzzle of a middle-distance sprinter

Jane Kavanagh, a 17-year-old swimmer from Westfield, New Jersey, has committed to Notre Dame for the fall of 2027 as a member of the class of 2031. Her most notable result came at YMCA Short Course Nationals, where she finished second in the 200-yard freestyle in 1:48.86 behind a strong field. She also placed fourth in the 200 backstroke in 1:58.36, fourth in the 200 individual medley in 2:02.89 and 10th in the 100 freestyle in 50.44. Notre Dame’s women’s team finished 11th of 15 teams at the 2026 ACC Championships with 366 points, a result that explains their long-term recruiting approach. The program is adding five recruits, including Eleanor Geraghty, Meghan Bluethmann, Maris Williams and Sarah Paisley Owen, aiming for roster depth rather than immediate stardom. Her current personal best in the 200-yard freestyle leaves her roughly 1.98 seconds behind the approximate ACC scoring standard of 1:46.88. That gap is significant in elite swimming, especially when combined with her Summer Juniors results, in which she placed 102nd in the 200-meter backstroke and 130th in the 100-meter freestyle. The gap between her YMCA-level success and her USA Swimming junior national results reveals a difference in competitive pathway and long-course development. Underwater technique and turn speed may be strengths in short-course pools, but translating those advantages to long-course pools remains a key challenge. The presence of upperclassman Becky Rentz, who scored points at ACCs in 1:46.16 in the 200 freestyle, gives Kavanagh a direct training reference and someone who has already navigated the transition from promising recruit to conference scorer. Coaches Mike Batore and Trevor Mankiewicz have scouted Kavanagh in person, a sign that Notre Dame sees her developmental upside. The real test will be whether she can specialize in the right events and find a more competitive training environment before enrollment. Early commitment offers security, but it also carries hidden risks: coaching changes, development plateaus and the temptation to become complacent. Kavanagh’s story is not a finished product. It is an opening chapter in a longer development narrative.
